A landscape loaded

Marjolein van Haasteren was educated at The Royal Academy in The Hague and currently lives and works in the city of Leiden. The portfolio of this naturalborn-born artist contains an impressive series of surreal landscapes filled with architecture.Through fluidity and transparancy, a spiritualized panorama ensues with images representing dreams as well as nightmares.

The latest landscapes Marjolein van Haasteren has created show nature as it is wild and playfull. As is common in her work, these full screen images are void of human presence, though some contain traces in the form of industrial machinery and artifacts.

The work contains elements reminiscent of Jugendstil and Romance, austere forms created by freehand techniques. Evocative without being overly narrative, this can be considered an illustrated fairy tale for grownups.

With work varying from troubling to playful, from apocaliptic to dreamy, the paintings show us a world that seems to exist parallel to our own. This is a place in which you would like to wallow, even though you may very well lose your way.
